High Definition Buying Guide

Most flat panel Tvs (Plasma and LCD) hitting the market nowadays are rated as high definition panels. But not all are created equal.

High Definition refers to the signal that is broadcast to the television, or created as a source. Your regular cable feed comes to your 27" CRT as an analog signal and carries aprox. 420 lines of resolution. DVDs provide your tv set with a resolution of aprox. 540 lines of resolution... these are the horizontal lines scrolling from top to bottom of you tv set. High definition on the other hand will broadcast a signal of 1080 lines of resolution. This signal is only provided so far by high definition satellite receivers, high definition cable tuners, upscaling DVD players, some over the air content in select areas and more recently from BluRay and HDDVD.

On February 17, 2009 all full-power broadcast television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting on analog airwaves and begin broadcasting only in digital. Digital broadcasting will allow stations to offer improved picture and sound quality and additional channels. Find out more about whether or not you will be impacted by the digital TV (DTV) transition. http://www.dtv.gov
